Keeping your Aadhaar card details accurate is essential for seamless access to various government services, subsidies, and financial transactions. The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) offers two primary methods for updating your Aadhaar information: online and offline. This guide provides a step-by-step approach to both processes, ensuring you can update your details efficiently.

Why Aadhaar Updates Are Important

Aadhaar is designed as a lifetime identity number. However, since people often change their address, get married, or shift jobs, keeping Aadhaar updated is crucial. According to experts, UIDAI recommends updating identity and address proof every 10 years to ensure accuracy and smooth usage of Aadhaar across platforms. An outdated Aadhaar may cause hurdles in availing benefits of government schemes, opening financial accounts, or completing KYC processes.

How To Update Aadhaar Online

Aadhaar holders can conveniently update their details through UIDAI’s online portal. Here’s a simplified guide to the process:

  • Visit the official UIDAI website and log in using your Aadhaar number and OTP.

  • Select the 'Update Address in your Aadhaar' option under the My Aadhaar tab.

  • Proceed to “Update Demographics Data” and log in again with Aadhaar number, captcha, and OTP.

  • Choose the Address Update option and continue with the Aadhaar Online Update Service.

  • Enter the correct updated details, double-check other information, and click on “Next”.

  • Review the changes, submit the request, and keep the Service Request Number (SRN) safe for tracking.

  • Once approved, the updated Aadhaar will be dispatched to the registered address. Experts point out that online updates are processed relatively quickly, though in some cases, resubmission may be needed if documents are rejected.

Updating Aadhaar Offline At Enrolment Centres

For those who prefer offline services or need to update biometric details, Aadhaar enrolment centres and Aadhaar Seva Kendras remain available. The process is as follows:

    • Carry original documents such as proof of birth, address, or identity for verification.

    • Fill in the Aadhaar Correction/Update form provided at the centre.

    • The operator scans your documents and, if required, captures new biometrics.

  • An acknowledgement receipt with an Update Request Number (URN) or Service Request Number (SRN) is provided to track the progress.

  • The corrected Aadhaar card is delivered by post to the registered address after successful verification.

What Can Be Updated In Aadhaar

Both online and offline methods allow users to update critical demographic information including:

    • Name

    • Date of Birth

    • Gender

  • Address

  • Mobile Number

  • Email ID

  • Additionally, Aadhaar enrolment centres allow biometric updates such as fingerprints, iris scans, and photographs.
