Silchar: Police at Churaibari watch post in Sribhumi district seized a huge consignment of cough syrup on Sunday and arrested a truck driver suspected to be part of an inter-state smuggling racket.

According to police sources, a truck travelling from Kolkata to Agartala was intercepted during routine checking at Churaibari on Sunday morning. A team, led by watch post in-charge Pranab Mili, conducted a detailed search and discovered a large quantity of cough syrup concealed inside multiple coloured plastic drums.

The driver, identified as Syed Abdul of Malda district in West Bengal, failed to provide satisfactory details regarding the source and destination of the consignment during preliminary questioning. He was taken into custody, and a case has been registered under the NDPS Act .

Police said the truck contained 144 cartons, with a total of 21,600 bottles of codeine phosphate-based cough syrup. An investigation is underway to trace the wider network involved in the illegal supply chain.

The seizures are typically related to the syrup’s misuse as a narcotic due to its codeine content, making it a controlled pharmaceutical substance under the NDPS Act. The police official said.

This is the second major seizure at the Churaibari watch post within a month. Earlier, police had intercepted several consignments of cough syrup, Yaba tablets, and other narcotic substances being smuggled along the same route.

Officers said the repeated seizures highlight how the route connecting West Bengal to Tripura via Sribhumi continues to be exploited by drug traffickers, prompting intensified checks at key transit points.
