Bokaro: The Bokaro Steel Plant (BSL) has replaced traditional ceiling fans with brushless DC motor (BLDC) fans across its administrative offices, hospital, community centres, schools, and several other establishments located in Bokaro township. With around 8,000 BLDC fans installed and another 2,000 in the process of being installed, the transition has led to around Rs 2 crore annual savings in electricity bill, officials said.

BSL spokesperson Manikant Dhan said, “While traditional ceiling fans consume around 150 to 200 watts, BLDC fans require only 28 watts. The new fans have been installed in major BSL buildings, including the Town Administration office, Human Resource Development Centre, Training Hostel, Bokaro General Hospital, and BSL-run schools.”

“Encouraged by the results, BSL is planning to extend the initiative to its 35,000 residential quarters, marking one of the township’s largest energy-efficiency upgrades,” he added. The 46-inch BLDC fan was conceptualised during the tenure of former director in-charge and current SAIL chairman Amarendu Prakash. The installation work is being executed by BSL’s electricity separtment.

While the installation of 10,000 BLDC fans cost BSL around Rs 2.15 crore, the plant recovered Rs 95 lakh by auctioning off the old fans.
