Consumer court awards Rs 50,000 to elderly man for travel agency's deficiency in service
Rourkela: A consumer court in Sundargarh has directed a Sambalpur-based travel agency to pay a compensation of Rs 50,000 to an elderly customer for deficiency in service , harassment and mental agony.
Tikeshwar Pandey, 61, a resident of Kanika in Sundargarh district had purchased 11 seats for him and his family members in two luxury buses for a 12-day pilgrimage to places like Ayodhya, Vrindavan, Varanasi, Prayagraj, Mathura and Chitrakoot from Dec 25, 2024, to Jan 5, 2025, by paying Rs 46,500 to the agency.

Pandey and his family members started the journey from Rengali in Sambalpur on Dec 25, 2024, and visited a few places. However, the tour operator didn’t take the group to six other places. At Mathura, the operator demanded Rs 1,000 per head to visit the six places. When Pandey and other tourists refused to give the money, the tour operator verbally abused and harassed them. Thereafter, the tour operator halted the bus in Varanasi and returned to Sambalpur.
Pandey filed a complaint before the District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission , Sundargarh, on March 26, against the travel agency.
After perusing the records and evidences, the commission observed that the agency had violated all the terms and conditions and didn’t take the complainant to some places mentioned in their advertisement, which amounted to deficiency in service and unfair trade practice. The agency did not file any written reply.
Pronouncing the judgment on Nov 12, the commission directed the agency to pay Rs 50,000 to the complainant within one month from the receipt of the order, failing which the amount will carry 9% interest per annum till realisation.
