Delhi Shrouded in Dense Fog: IGI Airport Alerts Travellers as Rail Services Face Disruptions
Dense fog continued to hover over Delhi on Monday morning, affecting visibility across the city and disrupting rail services, even as flight operations at Indira Gandhi International Airport remained largely unaffected.
In a passenger advisory, Delhi Airport clarified that flights were operating normally despite the foggy conditions. The advisory stated, “Low Visibility Procedures are still in process at Delhi Airport. All flight operations are functioning normally.” Passengers were also urged to stay in touch with their airlines, with the airport adding, “Passengers are advised to contact their respective airlines for the latest flight updates.”
While air travel remained steady, rail services faced disruptions. Several trains were rescheduled due to poor visibility, and visuals from New Delhi Railway Station showed thick fog blanketing platforms and tracks during the early hours.
Weather conditions showed mixed signals. Delhi’s air quality saw a marginal improvement, with the overall Air Quality Index recorded at 366 around 8 am, though it still remained in the ‘very poor’ category.
The India Meteorological Department issued a yellow alert for Monday, warning of moderate fog across most parts of the city and dense fog in isolated areas during early morning hours. According to the forecast, moderate to shallow fog is likely to persist from Tuesday through Thursday.
Although the IMD had earlier predicted the possibility of ‘cold day’ conditions, none of Delhi’s weather stations met the required criteria on Sunday. A ‘cold day’ in the capital is declared when the minimum temperature falls below 10°C and the maximum temperature departs from the normal by 4.5°C or more. However, on Saturday, Safdarjung recorded a maximum temperature of 16.9°C and Palam 16.3°C, briefly meeting cold day conditions.
The impact of fog was more pronounced a day earlier. On Sunday, moderate fog led to widespread disruptions, with 107 flights cancelled and nearly 500 delayed at IGI Airport. Similar delays were reported at several airports across north India, highlighting how persistent winter fog continues to challenge travel plans in the region.
