Marking the 101st birth anniversary of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, the Delhi government on Thursday launched the Atal Canteen scheme, opening 45 canteens across the capital to provide nutritious meals at a nominal cost of ₹5. The initiative is aimed at supporting daily wage workers, migrants and low-income families by ensuring access to balanced meals across key residential and industrial pockets of the city.

The scheme was inaugurated at an Atal canteen near Apna Bazaar in Nehru Nagar, Lajpat Nagar, in the presence of Union minister Manohar Lal Khattar, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta and Urban Development Minister Ashish Sood. Officials confirmed that the network will be rapidly expanded, with plans to increase the total number of canteens to 100 within the next 15 to 20 days.

Earlier in the day, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta travelled by Delhi Metro from Delhi Gate to Lajpat Nagar, interacting with commuters and underlining the government’s focus on public transport and accessibility.

Meal Timings, Capacity And Nutrition

Each Atal canteen will serve lunch from 11.30 am to 2 pm and dinner from 6.30 pm to 9 pm. The standard meal of around 600 grams includes roti, dal or pulses, seasonal vegetables, rice and pickle, providing 700–800 calories and 20–25 grams of protein. Each location is expected to serve nearly 1,000 meals daily, benefiting over one lakh people across the city.

Funding, Operations And Oversight

The Delhi government has allocated ₹104.24 crore for the project. Operations are being managed by 11 agencies selected through a tender process. Facilities include modern kitchens, LPG-based cooking systems, RO water plants, digital token systems and CCTV surveillance. Food quality will be monitored through regular testing by FSSAI and NABL-accredited laboratories.

Political Reactions

While the Congress criticised the initiative, arguing that subsidised meals cannot replace job creation, the government defended the scheme as a vital step towards strengthening Delhi’s food security infrastructure and offering immediate relief to vulnerable communities.
