High street retailer with 280 UK stores to close 115 branches - check your local

Claire's Accessories is set to permanently close 145 stores, following a rescue deal that saved part of the business from administration. Earlier this week, administrators agreed to sell 156 stores to investment group Modella Capital, securing roughly 1,000 jobs. However, the deal did not include 145 stores, which are now confirmed to be shutting down.

Some 115 of those are in the UK, while the rest are in Ireland and the Channel Islands. Closing-down sales, offering 20% off, will start at all affected locations this weekend, with exact closure dates varying by store. The total number of staff affected by the closures has not been confirmed.

Will Wright, UK chief executive of Interpath and joint administrator, said: "Our intention is to continue to trade the remaining portfolio of stores for as long as we can, while we explore the options available."

Despite efforts, administrators were unable to find a buyer for the 145 sites, leaving closures unavoidable.

Claire's UK entered administration on August 13, shortly after its US arm filed for bankruptcy on August 7. The US business has since secured a buyer for 950 stores. Modella Capital's deal, struck with Claire's US parent company Ames Watson, covers 156 UK stores, though some closures and job losses are expected as negotiations with landlords continue.

Joe Price, managing director at Modella Capital, said: "As a firm, we strongly believe this much-loved brand deserves the chance to remain on the High Street in the UK and Ireland.

"The issues Claire's is facing are significant, and we will need to work collaboratively with all interested parties if our proposed rescue plan is to succeed."
