Shooting During Evening Rush Hour

The incident occurred around 6.30 pm on 1st Main Road in the Rajajinagar Industrial Area, a busy stretch packed with commuters returning home from work. Police said the accused, Balamurugan, opened fire at close range on his wife, Bhuvaneshwari, triggering chaos and panic in the area.

Bhuvaneshwari (39), an assistant manager at Union Bank of India’s Basaveshwaranagar branch, was hit by four bullets two in the head and two on her left hand. Passers-by rushed to her aid and alerted the police. She was taken to a private hospital, where doctors declared her brought dead.

Marital Discord and Separation

Married in 2011, the couple had been living separately for nearly 18 months following frequent arguments. Bhuvaneshwari stayed in a rented house in Rajajinagar with their two children a 12-year-old son and an eight-year-old daughter. Balamurugan, who worked at a private IT firm, lived separately and was based in Whitefield.

Police said the accused suspected his wife of having an extramarital affair, though investigators have not found evidence to support the claim.

Move, Job Quit, and Rising Tensions

According to police, Bhuvaneshwari sought legal separation, which Balamurugan was unwilling to accept. Six months ago, after being transferred from the bank’s Whitefield branch, she moved to a new rented house without informing him.

Investigators said Balamurugan later traced her address, allegedly quit his IT job about four months ago, and shifted to Cholurpalya in Kempapura Agrahara to stay closer to her. The situation worsened last week when he received a formal divorce notice .

Planned Attack After Divorce Notice

Police believe the divorce notice pushed the accused over the edge. On Tuesday evening, Balamurugan allegedly followed Bhuvaneshwari as she returned from work, spotted her near the Basaveshwaranagar police station, and shot her on the road.

The sound of gunfire sent pedestrians and motorists scrambling for safety, briefly bringing traffic to a halt in the area.

Accused Surrenders, Weapon Seized

After the shooting, Balamurugan walked into a nearby police station and surrendered with the pistol used in the crime. DCP (West) S Girish said the weapon has been seized and authorities are verifying whether it was licensed.

While the accused claimed to have fired five rounds, police recovered only four empty cartridges from the crime scene.

Family Informed, Probe Continues

Bhuvaneshwari’s parents in Tamil Nadu’s Salem district have been informed of the incident. Police are continuing their investigation, including examining the source of the weapon and recording statements from witnesses and family members.
