'I spent five years using metal detector and couldn't believe amazing find'
A metal detector can be quite an enjoyable hobby, but it's also a genius way to come across some incredible finds in the field. It can be something which takes a lucky person a few days, or even years, to discover gold.
Many people who use the tool can contribute to the recording of historical finds, which helps archaeologists understand past settlements and trade patterns. Now one man revealed it's taken him five years to spot something valuable.
In a post on TikTok, user @gettinhammereduk, who boasts 4,000 followers, recently shared his amazement at finding a silver Roman Denarius.
The coin was minted in Rome between 117 and 138 AD from the reign of Emperor Hadrian. It features his portrait on the obverse and the symbolic imagery on the reverse.
It serves as both currency and a propaganda tool. These are an important part of history and a crucial piece for any collectors' stash, so when it was found during a dig, the TikTok user couldn't quite believe it.
He said in excitement: "Come on, it's taken me five years I finally found I think my first ever silver Roman Denari."
As he shows off the treasure, he begins to wonder if the coin is silver or not.
"On further inspection, this Roman we think is actually a silver one," he explained. "Look at the detail on it, it's a beautiful coin."
He also confirmed he would clean up the back of the coin to see if it's actually a silver Denarius.
And much to his surprise, it turned out to be exactly what he thought it was.
He added: "We're going to clean it up and confirm it but I'm pretty sure that is a silver Denari.
"My first ever Silver Denari, look at that, stunning coin. Come on!"
The collector then confirmed the coin was a Silver Denarius Rome from Hadrian AD 117-138.
One of these coins can easily sell between £150-£400 over on eBay, according to current listings.
Despite how old they are, these recognisable Roman coins are still highly sought-after by collectors and historians alike.
Since the video was shared on TikTok, people were equally amazed as one said: "Well done boys!" Another added: "Well saved."
Meanwhile the Royal Mint is selling these coins for £275 on the official website.
The listing read: "Hadrian (A.D. 117-138), Silver Denarius. Mint of Rome, struck A.D. 117-138.
