The Mahaa News office in Hyderabad was attacked on Saturday by a group of unidentified individuals, triggering widespread criticism and concern over press freedom. Eyewitnesses alleged that the attackers were supporters of the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) and followers of its senior leader K.T. Rama Rao. Armed with sticks, knives, and stones, the mob reportedly stormed the premises, causing severe destruction.
The assailants targeted vehicles parked outside the office and proceeded to vandalise furniture, computers, and other equipment inside the building. The newsroom was left in complete disarray. Several members of the staff sustained injuries during the assault and were admitted to nearby hospitals. While the exact extent of the damage is yet to be officially quantified, preliminary assessments indicate significant harm to infrastructure and a profound impact on employee morale.
Political Leaders Denounce the Attack
Mahaa News, known for its outspoken political coverage in Telangana, issued a strong statement condemning the incident. A senior editor described it as "an assault on the fundamental values of democracy and an attempt to intimidate the press". They added, “We won’t be silenced by threats.”
Top Congress leaders, including Telangana’s Deputy Chief Minister, visited the news office to show support. Speaking to reporters, they described the attack as a deliberate attempt to suppress journalistic independence and called for the immediate arrest of those involved.
Press Organisations Demand Accountability
The Press Club of Hyderabad, along with various civil society groups and journalists’ associations, also condemned the violence. In a joint statement, they urged the police to take swift action and ensure the safety of media professionals across the state.
So far, neither the BRS party nor K.T. Rama Rao has issued an official response. The Telangana Police have confirmed that a formal investigation is underway. Additional security measures have been deployed to other media offices in Hyderabad as a precaution.
