Police launch probe into assault on woman accused of witchcraft
Bhagalpur: The police on Sunday launched an investigation into a brutal assault on a 34-year-old woman by her distant relative and others at Sakrama village under Sanhoula police station area in Kahalgaon sub-division of Bhagalpur district .
According to police, Suman Devi was accused of practicing witchcraft by her relative, Dhuni Paswan, who blamed her for the death of a newborn baby at the village. Guddu Paswan, Suman’s husband, informed the police that Chanda Devi, daughter of Dhuni, had given birth to a baby boy about a week ago. The infant was reportedly suffering from jaundice and tragically passed away around 11pm on Saturday night. Following the child’s death, Suman was labelled a witch and held responsible, leading to the violent attack on her.
Later, Dhuni along with others reached Guddu’s house in the wee hours on Sunday and asked Suman to perform puja to make the deceased alive with her black magic rituals. On denial, they severely assaulted her.
Guddu stated that he took his injured wife to Sanhoula police station at first to inform the police and later admitted her to Jawahar Lal Nehru Medical College and Hospital (JLNMCH), Bhagalpur, for treatment. Dhuni and four other accomplices have been named in the FIR lodged by Guddu.
Rupesh Kumar, SHO of Sanhoula police station, said, “The matter is being probed and action will be taken against the culprits. Local residents are being cross-examined about the incident.”
