In a horrifying crime straight out of a movie script, a woman from Nalasopara near Mumbai has been accused of murdering her husband and hiding his body beneath the tiles of their home. The shocking incident has stirred the local community and the nation, mainly due to its chilling similarity to the plot of the Bollywood thriller Drishyam.

The Disappearance and the Discovery

Vijay Chavan, a 35-year-old resident of Gadgapada in Nalasopara East-about 70 km from Mumbai-had been missing for 15 days. Concerned by his sudden disappearance and lack of communication, his brothers decided to visit his home to investigate. There, they noticed that certain floor tiles looked recently changed and didn’t match the rest.

Curiosity turned into horror when they broke open the mismatched tiles. Beneath them, they discovered a vest buried in the floor and a foul smell emanating from underneath. The police were immediately called. Upon further digging, officers uncovered Vijay’s decomposing body hidden right under his home.

The Suspects on the RunPolice now suspect that Vijay was murdered by his 28-year-old wife, Komal Chavan. She has been missing for two days, along with a man named Monu, who lived in the same neighborhood. Investigators believe the two were romantically involved and may have plotted the murder together. Both are currently absconding and have become the main suspects in the case.

Authorities are working to track them down while piecing together the events leading up to the crime. Neighbours have described the couple as quiet, but some now say they had noticed tensions in the household in recent months.

When Life Imitates Art

The shocking case has caught public attention not just for its brutality, but also for its eerie resemblance to the storyline of Drishyam, a popular Indian crime thriller.

Released first in Malayalam in 2013 and later adapted into Hindi in 2015 with Ajay Devgn in the lead role, Drishyam tells the story of Vijay Salgaonkar, a cable operator who goes to great lengths to protect his family after a crime. When his daughter kills a boy in self-defence, Vijay buries the body and constructs a fake timeline to outsmart the police.

In the film, the body is hidden in a construction site-and eventually under the floor of a police station—adding to the psychological tension of the narrative. But while Drishyam is fiction and its protagonist draws empathy, the real-life case is a grim reminder of how chillingly life can imitate art.

Investigation Underway

Police are continuing their investigation, gathering evidence from the crime scene and speaking to neighbours and relatives. A manhunt is on to locate Komal and Monu, who could hold the key to unraveling what really happened in the Chavan household.
