In a startling turn of events, workers cleaning a pit in a Bengaluru apartment complex stumbled upon skeletal remains, including what appears to be fragments of a skull. The unexpected find has left residents shaken and prompted a full-scale police investigation.
The eerie discovery was made on June 16 at an apartment complex in Industrial Layout, Begur, located in southeast Bengaluru. The complex, home to about 45 families, had recently been flagged by civic authorities for poor stormwater drainage. In response, the Resident Welfare Association (RWA) had initiated a thorough clean-up of its 16 percolation pits, used for rainwater absorption.
During the cleaning process, labourers working on one of the pits near the parking area encountered bones buried deep in the muddy bottom. They immediately informed the RWA president, who alerted the local police.
What followed was a wave of concern and curiosity. Although it’s still unclear whether the remains are human or animal, authorities have sent the bones to the Forensic Science Laboratory for further analysis. "It's possible the remains surfaced from there," a senior police officer said, referring to speculation that the site may have once been a burial ground. However, police are waiting for scientific confirmation before drawing conclusions.
Some long-term residents believe the land may have historical significance. Their suspicions, combined with the unsettling discovery, have created an atmosphere of unease in the community.
“There are 16 percolation pits in different corners of the apartment complex. Workers found the remains in one of the pits,” an officer from Begur police station confirmed.
The RWA had begun pit-cleaning operations in response to multiple municipal notices about waterlogging and poor drainage. "Some choked pits were not draining properly, so we began cleaning all of them systematically," the association president told police.
As the community waits for forensic results, the incident continues to stir concern among residents, many of whom now question what else might lie beneath their homes.
