Three-month-old girl adopted by West Bengal couple following CARA guidelines
Berhampur : A three-month-old girl, who was under the care of the Gajapati administration after her single mother handed her over to the child welfare committee over two months ago, found new parents from West Bengal on Saturday.
After following rules and regulations as per the guidelines of the Central Adoption Resource Authority (CARC), Gajapati collector Madhumita handed over the baby to the Bengal couple at Paralakhemundi. CARC is an autonomous and statutory body under the ministry of women and child welfare.

The couple had waited for around four years to adopt a baby after applying to CARC. “From today, she is our daughter,” said her adoptive mother. The couple work in the hospitality sector.
The baby was housed in a childcare institute near Paralakhemundi after she was handed over by her mother about 15 days after her birth as she was unable to take care of the child, sources said.
Divisional forest officer (DFO) of Paralakhemundi, K Nagaraju, child welfare committee members Aswini Mohapatra and Mamata Satapathy, district child protection officer (DCPO) Arun Kumar Tripathy, officials of the childcare home, among others, were present during the ceremony.
Last year, another couple from West Bengal had adopted a four-month-old girl from Gajapati district, who was also handed over by her unwed mother to the administration.
Tripathy said a total 74 children from Gajapati have been adopted in the last seven years, after the specialised adoption agency was set up in 2018. “The district administration has created awareness on procedures for legal adoption of children,” he said.
