Woman Robbed by Fake 'Babas' in Delhi, All Arrested

In a bizarre twist of crime and disguise, Delhi Police have arrested four men who posed as ash-smeared ‘babas’ to snatch a woman’s diamond ring in broad daylight.
The incident took place on August 1 when a woman travelling in a Rapido taxi from Moti Nagar to Connaught Place was stopped at the Shadipur Flyover red light. Suddenly, three men dressed as priests approached her side of the cab and asked for alms. She handed them ₹200, but within seconds, one of them snatched a gold and diamond ring from her finger and vanished.
The woman promptly filed a complaint at Moti Nagar Police Station, triggering an investigation led by SHO Varun Dalal and ACP Vijay Singh. CCTV footage from the area helped track the suspects fleeing in an auto-rickshaw.
Police traced the auto’s owner, who had rented it to a man named Vinod Kamat. He was arrested near Ashoka Park Metro Station and soon confessed. He led authorities to his accomplices Kabir and Birju in Punjabi Bagh. Kabir, as it turned out, is Birju’s son. Another accused, Amar, remains on the run.
The trio admitted to selling the stolen ring to a local goldsmith, Gurcharan Singh, for ₹26,000. A raid at his shop in GTB Nagar revealed the melted gold and 61 tiny diamonds recovered and now part of the evidence.
What’s more shocking is how well-planned the act was. The gang used religious garb, face paint, and ashes to dodge suspicion. Vinod Kamat played the driver’s role, while the others carried out the actual theft in disguise.
Police have recovered the auto-rickshaw, the make-up kit, priestly robes, and the dismantled ring. Deputy Commissioner Vichitra Veer confirmed the arrests and assured that efforts are underway to catch the missing accused.
