Delhi earthquake: 3.7 magnitude tremors shake Delhi-NCR for 2nd straight day

New Delhi: Light tremors were felt across Delhi-NCR on Friday evening as an earthquake of magnitude 3.7 struck the region. According to the National Centre for Seismology, the quake occurred at 7:49 pm IST with its epicentre in Jhajjar, Haryana.

The earthquake was recorded at a depth of 10 km, located at latitude 28.68°N and longitude 76.72°E. While the tremors caused brief panic among residents, no immediate reports of damage or casualties have been received. Authorities are monitoring the situation and have urged citizens to remain calm and follow safety protocols.

This is the second day that the earthquake was witnessed in the region. On Thursday, a 4.4 magnitude tremor struck the region with Jhajjar as the epicentre. Tremors were felt in Delhi, Noida, Gurugram, and nearby areas. Delhi lies in Seismic Zone IV, a “High Damage Risk Zone” as per the Delhi Disaster Management Authority.

Its proximity to the Himalayas and presence of multiple fault lines—such as the Mahendragarh-Dehradun Fault, Delhi-Hardwar Ridge, and Sohna Fault—make it vulnerable to seismic activity. Although quakes of magnitude 5–6 are common, stronger quakes (7–8) are occasionally recorded. Since 1720, five major quakes have occurred in the region.
