Charlize Theron embraces 50, says she's not slowing down
Charlize Theron is about to turn 50, and she’s not fazed. As The Old Guard 2 premieres on Netflix, the Oscar winner says she’s focused on what feels right for her. Whether it’s wearing fishnets or playing action roles, Theron says she’s done worrying about what others think.
“I have limited time left, and I’m going to do it up the way I want to do it up,” she said, adding that she no longer lives to meet expectations.
In The Old Guard 2, Theron returns as Andy, a warrior battling alongside other powerful women. The sequel also features Uma Thurman and KiKi Layne, with Victoria Mahoney directing. Mahoney is the first woman to direct part of a Star Wars film, and Theron praised the inclusive team on the project.
“When I started my career, I never saw women in such positions,” she said. “It feels better these days, more inclusive.”
Theron recalled that earlier in her career, if another actress was cast, she wouldn’t even read for the role again. That has changed, she says, but there’s still a long way to go in creating equal opportunities for women.
Theron’s daughters, Jackson (12) and August (9), are unimpressed by her superhero roles. She joked with Jimmy Kimmel that they were more excited by Tom Cruise’s stunts than hers.
Beyond Hollywood, Theron continues to invest in South Africa through her Africa Outreach Project. She recently hosted a fundraiser to support young people and address issues like femicide, working with grassroots organisations.
“We do our small part, partnering with those in the trenches,” she said, highlighting that the work isn’t limited by race, but aimed at those most often overlooked.

Theron’s latest film Apex also debuts on Netflix. In it, she plays a grieving widow who heads into the Australian wilderness and finds herself hunted by a serial killer, played by Taron Egerton. Eric Bana plays her late husband.
Her production companies—Denver and Delilah Productions and Secret Menu—are also active. One upcoming documentary project covers the Alexander brothers, who face sexual abuse allegations.
Theron credits her mother, Gerda, for her perspective on aging.
“I told my mom I was looking forward to 50, and she said, ‘Oh, honey, it gets so much better in your 70s.’”
With strong genes, a full schedule, and clear intentions, Charlize Theron shows no signs of slowing down as she steps into a new decade.
