Celine Song's most recent directorial Materialists, featuring Dakota Johnson, Pedro Pascal, and Chris Evans, has faced criticism from numerous netizens for allegedly endorsing "broke man propaganda." Spoiler alert: In the movie, Dakota’s character chooses to leave a billionaire in order to reconnect with her ex-boyfriend, who is a struggling cater-waiter. When questioned about the backlash, here’s the director's response.

Materialists Director REACTS To 'Broke Man Propaganda' Allegations
In a recent interview with Hindustan Times, Celine voiced her concerns regarding a troubling trend she has observed—calling out men for their income levels under the pretense of feminism. She identifies as a radical feminist and leftist, asserting that genuine feminism should not endorse classist views. For her, linking a man's value to his earnings undermines the fundamental principles of feminism.
She stated, "It's really upsetting to me that what happened to the way that we talk about feminism, the way that we talk about being a person and a woman. It's become that now people are going to judge each other for how much money they make. What happened? We actually think that being a billionaire is not entirely an immoral thing? What happened to the Occupy movement? What happened to the way we talk about class? What happened to the way that we talk about class gap and income gap?
“What happened to all of that? How are we talking about it, especially for the topic of love? How is it that people are talking it this way?” added Song. She expressed that it was very upsetting and sad to see people now appearing openly comfortable with classism, noting that it was surprising to her how being classist toward one another had nearly become trendy.
