The Evolution of Evil: Top 5 Dragon Ball Villains

Dragon Ball has defined the ‘shonen’ genre for decades largely due to its iconic antagonists. Akira Toriyama did not just create monsters but he created personalities that challenged Goku’s philosophy as much as his power. From tyrants who ruled galaxies to bio- engineered nightmares, here are top 5 Dragon Ball villains :

Frieza

Frieza is not just evil but the literal definition of it. His introduction shifted the series from a basic martial arts anime to a galactic space opera.

What makes him terrifying is not just his power level or his various forms but also his ruthlessness. He commits genocides and destroys entire planets with the clinical detachment of a businessman closing a deal. His role in the destruction of the Saiyan race provides the foundational trauma for the series’ protagonist and his return in Dragon Ball Super as a reluctant ally proves that his charisma is eternal.

Cell

While Frieza was born a God, Cell was built to be one. Cell was a bio android who contained the DNA of the world’s strongest fighters, he represents the darker side of Goku’s own obsession with being the strongest.

Cell had three forms with his ‘perfect form’ being one of the sleekest designs in anime history. Cell was a madman who simply wanted to prove that he was the best by hosting a televised tournament and was only defeated when Gohan took his Super Saiyan 2 form which also was somewhat of passing of the torch of the series.

King Piccolo

Before there were aliens and Gods, there was the Demon King. King Piccolo changed the DNA of the Dragon Ball series by introducing true stakes as before him the series was relatively light hearted and after his introduction major characters began to die.

He was the first villain to successfully wish for youth and actually take over the world. He represents the ancient, mystical evil that felt truly unstoppable. By purging the goodness from his heart to become a God, the Nameless Namikin created a monster that forced Goku to grow up from a boy into a saviour.

Goku black

Dragon Ball Super hits its stride with Future Trunks Saga by introducing a villain that attacked the heroes on a philosophical level; Zamasu, a rogue apprentice Supreme Kai, believed that mortals were a mistake that needed to be ‘corrected’.

Stealing Goku’s body was a masterstroke of psychological warfare as seeing the kindest face in the universe twisted into a mask of divine arrogance was chilling. He remains unique as in his own mind he was the hero of the story.

Majin Buu

Majin Buu is the personification of chaos. He is unique because he evolved from different stages of evil: from the childlike, fat Buu to the intelligent Super Buu and finally to the chaotic and mindless Kid Buu.

He is chilling as he cannot be reasoned with, he neither wants to rule and he neither wants perfection. He simply wants destruction. He was the first villain to actually destroy Earth and forced the entire universe to come together to stop him.
