To prevent identity theft and misuse of Aadhaar numbers, the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has introduced a streamlined process for reporting the death of a family member. This service, now available on the myAadhaar portal , allows citizens to ensure timely deactivation of Aadhaar numbers of deceased persons.
Why Deactivation Matters
Aadhaar is a critical identity document linked with several services and financial instruments. If not deactivated after a person's death, it can potentially be misused for fraudulent activities. Recognising this risk, UIDAI urges family members to report the demise of their loved ones to safeguard against unauthorised use.
