The Voter ID card is not just a tool for exercising your democratic right—it also serves as a key identity document in India. Issued by the Election Commission of India (ECI), the Voter ID enables eligible citizens to cast their vote during elections. Whether you are a first-time voter or need to fix errors on your card, the ECI has simplified the process with an online portal.

Here’s everything you need to know about how to register for a new Voter ID card or correct details on an existing one—completely online.

Who Is Eligible for a Voter ID Card?

To apply for a Voter ID card in India, you must:

  • Be a citizen of India

  • Be 18 years or older on the qualifying date (1st January of the year)

  • Be a resident of the constituency where you want to register

  • Not be disqualified due to any legal provisions

You can register for a new Voter ID card through the National Voters’ Service Portal (NVSP) or the Voter Helpline App. Follow these steps:

    1. Visit NVSP or Download Voter Helpline App
Go to https://voters.eci.gov.in or use the Voter Helpline App (available on Android and iOS).

  • Create an Account
Register with your mobile number and email address. An OTP will be sent to verify your details.

  • Choose Form 6 (New Voter Registration)

    • Proof of age (Aadhaar card, birth certificate, class 10 certificate)

    • Proof of address (utility bill, bank passbook, rental agreement)

  • Recent passport-size photo

    1. Submit the Form
Once completed, submit the form. You’ll receive a reference number to track your application status.

    2. Verification by BLO
A Booth Level Officer (BLO) will visit your residence to verify your documents and address before your name is added to the electoral roll.

How to Correct Voter ID Details Online

If your name, address, date of birth, or other details are incorrect, you can request corrections using Form 8 online.

    1. Login to NVSP Portal or Voter Helpline App
Use your registered mobile number and password.

  • Select Form 8 (Correction in Voter ID)
Fill in your correct information and tick only the fields you want to modify.

  • Upload Supporting Documents
Submit self-attested copies of relevant documents to support the correction request (e.g., Aadhaar card for name correction, birth certificate for DOB correction).

  • Submit and Track Status
Once submitted, use the reference number to track the correction request.

  • Time Taken for Registration or Correction

After successful verification by the BLO, your updated Voter ID or inclusion in the electoral roll will take approximately 2 to 3 weeks. The physical card is dispatched via post, and the digital copy is also available on the portal.
