Cyclone Ditwah Update: Heavy Rain Expected in Tamil Nadu, No Landfall Expected

Cyclone Ditwah is sweeping close to the eastern coastline, bringing intense rain to Tamil Nadu and Puducherry even as the system weakens. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) confirmed that the cyclone will not make landfall and is instead likely to drift northwards, moving parallel to the coasts over the next few hours.

Cyclone Update: System Weakening Near Coast

The cyclone is currently positioned over the Southwest Bay of Bengal, around 50 km from the Tamil Nadu coast. While it will come even closer by evening, its windspeed is expected to drop from around 90 kmph in the morning to 55–65 kmph. A red alert remains in force across Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Andhra Pradesh.

Heavy Rainfall Expected Across Multiple Districts

IMD forecasts extremely heavy rain in Cuddalore, Nagapattinam, Mayiladuthurai, Villupuram, and Chengalpattu, as well as Puducherry and Karaikal.

Chennai and several districts including Thanjavur, Trichy, Salem, Kancheepuram, Tiruvallur, and Ranipet can also expect heavy downpours through the day.

Impact on Andhra Pradesh

Parts of South Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Rayalaseema are also likely to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall, prompting authorities to stay on alert.

Possible Damage and Safety Concerns

With strong winds and non-stop rain, officials warn of damage to thatched houses, uprooting of trees, and power or communication disruptions. Low-lying areas and farmlands may face flooding as the system moves along the coast.

Authorities urge residents in vulnerable regions to stay indoors, follow official updates, and avoid unnecessary travel until conditions improve.
