A passport is not just a travel document but also a key identity proof for Indian citizens. If your passport is nearing expiry, has been damaged, lost, or exhausted its pages, you need to get it reissued. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) provides a streamlined online process to apply for passport reissue under various categories.

Here’s a detailed guide on how to reissue your passport, the documents required, and the step-by-step online procedure.

When Do You Need a Passport Reissue?

You need to apply for a passport reissue under the following conditions:

  • Expired or about-to-expire passport (within 1 year of expiry)

  • Exhaustion of pages

  • Damaged or soiled passport

  • Lost or stolen passport

  • Change in personal details (name, address, date of birth, etc.)

  • In such cases, a new passport with a new number will be issued, unlike a renewal, which typically updates the validity of the existing one.

Step 1: Register on the Passport Seva Portal

Visit the official Passport Seva website.
Click on “Register Now” to create an account.
Provide your basic details like name, date of birth, email, and mobile number.
Once registered, log in using your credentials.

Step 2: Choose the Reissue Application

After logging in, click on “Apply for Fresh Passport/Reissue of Passport”.
Choose “Reissue” and select the appropriate reason – expiry, damage, loss, etc.
Fill in the application form with accurate personal details, address, family information, employment details, and previous passport details.

You can either fill the form online or download the form, fill it offline, and upload it later.

Step 3: Submit and Pay the Fees

Once the form is complete, submit it and move to the fee payment section.
Choose the nearest Passport Seva Kendra (PSK) or Post Office Passport Seva Kendra (POPSK) for your appointment.
Fees for reissue vary depending on the category:

    • ₹1,500 (36-page booklet, normal scheme)

  • ₹2,000 (60-page booklet, normal scheme)

  • ₹3,500 or more for tatkal (urgent processing)

  • Pay via internet banking, credit/debit card, or UPI. Once the payment is successful, schedule your appointment.

    Step 4: Book an Appointment

After fee payment, book a convenient slot at your chosen PSK or POPSK.
You will receive an Application Reference Number (ARN) and appointment details via email and SMS.

Step 5: Documents Required for Passport Reissue

Carry the following original documents along with self-attested photocopies:

    • Old passport (original)

    • Aadhaar card

    • PAN card

    • Proof of address (Voter ID, utility bill, rental agreement, etc.)

    • Annexure E (self-declaration affidavit in case of tatkal)

  • FIR copy (if passport is lost or stolen)

  • Documents supporting changes (e.g. marriage certificate for name change)

  • Make sure all documents are valid, legible, and up to date.

Step 6: Visit the Passport Seva Kendra

Reach the Passport Seva Kendra (or POPSK) on your scheduled date with all required documents.
Go through the verification process, biometrics, and document submission.
Carry printed ARN, appointment confirmation, and ID proofs.

The verification process at the PSK involves:

    • Token generation

    • Data entry confirmation

    • Document verification

    • Biometric capture (photo, fingerprint)

    • Granting of passport reissue request

Step 7: Police Verification (If Required)

Police verification may be initiated depending on the type of reissue request.
    For example:

    • Expired passport with address change will usually trigger a verification.

    • If applying for a tatkal reissue, police verification may happen post-issuance.

Ensure you are available at your residence for the police visit and provide correct documents when asked.

Step 8: Track Your Application Status

After submission, you can track your application on the Passport Seva website using the ARN number.
Updates are also sent via SMS and email.

    Step 9: Passport Delivery

Once processed, the reissued passport will be dispatched via India Post to your registered address.
Delivery usually takes 7–10 working days under normal conditions or 1–3 days under tatkal.
