Updating the mobile number linked with your Aadhaar is crucial for receiving OTPs and accessing online services. Traditionally, this required a visit to an Aadhaar Seva Kendra, but now, UIDAI has introduced a new facility to update your mobile number online in certain cases. This article provides a step-by-step guide on how to update your Aadhaar-linked mobile number without visiting a physical Aadhaar centre.

Importance of Mobile Number Linked with Aadhaar

The mobile number linked with Aadhaar plays a vital role in identity verification. It is required for availing services like e-KYC, OTP-based authentication, DigiLocker access, and for making Aadhaar-related updates. Without a valid and updated number, you may be restricted from using most Aadhaar-enabled online services.

Who Can Update Mobile Number Online

UIDAI allows only those users to update their mobile number online who already have a mobile number linked with their Aadhaar. If your number is already registered, you can now change or update it via the UIDAI's Self-Service Update Portal (SSUP). However, if your Aadhaar does not have any number linked, you still need to visit an Aadhaar Seva Kendra.

Requirements for Online Update

Before you begin the process of updating your mobile number online, keep the following requirements ready:

  • Aadhaar number

  • Currently linked mobile number for OTP verification

  • New mobile number to be updated

  • Stable internet connection

  • Steps to Update Aadhaar Mobile Number Online

Follow these steps to update your mobile number in Aadhaar from the comfort of your home:

    1. Visit the UIDAI Self-Service Update Portal at https://ssup.uidai.gov.in.

    2. Click on "Proceed to Update Aadhaar".

    3. Enter your 12-digit Aadhaar number and complete the CAPTCHA verification.

    4. Request OTP, which will be sent to your currently registered mobile number.

    5. After entering OTP, choose “Mobile Number” as the field to be updated.

  • Enter your new mobile number and submit the request.

  • Confirm and verify the update using OTP sent to your new mobile number.

  • Upon successful submission, you will receive a Service Request Number (SRN) to track your update status.

  • Is Any Fee Required

As per UIDAI’s current guidelines, no charges are levied for updating mobile numbers online through the Self-Service Update Portal. However, if you go to an Aadhaar centre, a nominal fee of Rs. 50 is usually applicable.

How Long Does It Take to Update

Once you have submitted your update request online, it typically takes 3 to 5 working days for the changes to reflect in your Aadhaar records. You can track the status of your update using the SRN provided during the submission.

What to Do If OTP Is Not Received

If you do not receive the OTP on your currently registered number, you will not be able to proceed with the online update. In that case, visiting a nearby Aadhaar Seva Kendra is the only option. Carry your original Aadhaar card and identity proof for a smooth process.

    Checking the Update Status

    To check the update status:

    1. Visit the SSUP portal.

    2. Click on "Check Status of Update Request".

    3. Enter your Aadhaar number and the SRN.

  • The portal will show whether your update is pending, completed, or failed.
