If you’ve ever tried updating your EPF employment details, you know how tedious the process used to be - endless document uploads and waiting for employer approvals. But now, the Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has made life easier for millions of EPF members by streamlining the process to update or correct personal and service-related information on the portal.

Thanks to this new update, members can now independently update key employment details like the date of joining and exit - without uploading documents or requiring employer validation — provided their UAN is Aadhaar-verified.

What’s New in the EPFO Update Process?
Earlier, any correction to personal details (like name, DOB, or gender) or employment history (like joining or exit date) required documentary proof and employer involvement. This was particularly frustrating for people who had left a job long ago or whose employers were unresponsive.

Now, EPF members whose UANs are linked with Aadhaar can update several key fields directly, including:

  • Name
  • Date of birth
  • Gender
  • Nationality
  • Father's or mother's name
  • Marital status
  • Spouse's name
  • Date of joining and date of leaving a job

EPFO recently posted on social media:

"You can update your date of joining and leaving in your EPF account without needing to upload documents or get employer approval. EPFO puts the power in your hands."

This self-service feature is designed to save time, cut dependency on employers, and reduce processing delays.

Who Still Needs to Upload Documents?
While the process is now easier for many, there’s a catch for a certain group of members. If your UAN was generated before October 1, 2017, it may not be Aadhaar-seeded. In that case, updating service-related information — such as your date of joining or exit — may still require employer certification and supporting documents.

So, if your UAN is older and not Aadhaar-verified, you may not be able to take full advantage of this new feature just yet. It’s advisable to get your Aadhaar seeded with your UAN to benefit from these seamless updates.

How to Update Your Date of Exit on the EPFO Portal

For those eligible, here’s how to quickly update your date of exit online without any paperwork:

  • Log in to the EPFO member portal using your UAN and OTP sent to your registered mobile number.
  • Under the ‘Manage’ tab, click on ‘Mark Exit’. (Note: This option is only available within two months of leaving the job.)
  • Select the employer/company from the dropdown list.
  • Enter your exit date and tick the consent checkbox.
  • Click ‘Request OTP’ - this OTP will be sent to your Aadhaar-linked mobile number.
  • Enter the OTP and click ‘Submit’.
  • A confirmation alert will pop up- confirm to complete the process.

Once done, the portal will display a message confirming that your date of exit has been successfully updated.
