What Is GSTIN?

GSTIN is issued by the GST authorities to individuals and businesses that register under the GST law. This number is required for issuing GST-compliant invoices, filing GST returns, and availing input tax credit. If your GSTIN is inactive, pending, or cancelled, it could affect your business transactions and compliance status.


Documents Required to Check GSTIN Status

You don’t need many documents to check your GSTIN status. All you need is either:


  • Your 15-digit GSTIN

  • Or your PAN (Permanent Account Number), if you're checking status for all registrations under your name



How to Check GSTIN Status on the Official GST Portal

Follow these steps to check your GSTIN registration status using the Government of India’s GST website:


Step 1: Visit the GST Portal

  • Go to the official GST website: www.gst.gov.in

  • On the homepage, look for the “Search Taxpayer” option in the top menu


Step 2: Select the Search Type

You will see three search options:


  • Search by GSTIN/UIN

  • Search by PAN

  • Search by Composition Taxpayer

Select “Search by GSTIN/UIN” if you have the GSTIN number
Select “Search by PAN” if you wish to check all registered GST numbers under a particular PAN


Step 3: Enter GSTIN or PAN

  • Enter the 15-digit GSTIN or the PAN in the designated box


  • Fill in the captcha code for security verification

  • Click on the Search button


  • Step 4: View the Status

    The portal will display the following details:

    • Legal Name of the Business

    • State of registration


  • Date of registration

  • Type of taxpayer (Regular, Composition, etc.)

  • GSTIN Status: Active, Inactive, Cancelled, or Suspended

  • If the GSTIN is active, it means you are compliant and can continue using it for business operations. If it's cancelled or inactive, you must contact your jurisdictional officer or apply for revocation if eligible.


    Checking GST Registration Application Status

    If you’ve recently applied for GST registration and want to check the application status, here are the steps:


    • Go to www.gst.gov.in

    • Click on “Services” > “Registration” > “Track Application Status”

    • Enter your ARN (Acknowledgement Reference Number) received at the time of registration

    • Enter the captcha and click on “Search”

    • The current status of your registration (pending, approved, rejected) will be displayed
