New Delhi: The Indian government is launching a new FASTag-based annual pass priced at ₹3,000, allowing private vehicle owners to make up to 200 highway trips in a year. This announcement was made by Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari in a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Wednesday.

Available exclusively for non-commercial private vehicles, the new annual pass will be issued starting 15 August. It will be valid for one year from the date of activation or until 200 trips are completed—whichever comes first.

"The annual pass will enable seamless and cost-effective travel across National Highways throughout the country. A dedicated link for activation and renewal will soon be made available on the Rajmarg Yatra App as well as on the official websites of NHAI (National Highways Authority of India) and MoRTH (Ministry of Road Transport and Highways)," Mr Gadkari said.

He added, "This policy addresses long-standing concerns regarding toll plazas located within a 60 km range and simplifies toll payments through a single, affordable transaction. By reducing wait times, easing congestion, and minimising disputes at toll plazas, the annual pass aims to deliver a faster and smoother travel experience for millions of private vehicle owners."

Last month, there were reports that the government was working on a new tolling framework designed to make highway travel more efficient and affordable for regular commuters.

Under the announced scheme, a one-time FASTag recharge of ₹3,000 will allow unlimited highway access for 200 trips annually, eliminating the need for frequent toll payments.

There was also talk of a distance-based toll policy, proposing a flat fee of ₹50 per 100 km, which could replace the current variable toll plaza system. However, it is still unclear if this model will be officially implemented.

The government had earlier shelved a 'lifetime FASTag' proposal, which suggested a ₹30,000 pass valid for 15 years.

The new system will initially operate through the existing FASTag infrastructure, but is expected to transition to GPS-based, sensor-driven toll collection over time—removing the need for physical toll booths and enabling barrier-free travel.
