The much-awaited FASTag annual pass came into effect nationwide on August 15, 2025, offering road users a cost-saving option for smoother travel. While it has been welcomed with great enthusiasm, travellers in Uttar Pradesh need to be cautious - this pass is not valid on some of the state’s busiest expressways.
What Is the FASTag Annual Pass ?
The FASTag annual pass, launched by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), is priced at ₹3,000 and allows up to 200 trips in one year. Designed for non-commercial vehicles like private cars, jeeps, and vans, the scheme has already seen an impressive response - over 1.2 lakh users activated the pass within hours on its first day.
Not Valid on These Expressways of Uttar Pradesh
Despite its nationwide launch, the annual pass cannot be used on state-managed expressways in Uttar Pradesh. Drivers will still need to pay regular toll charges on these four routes:
The reason? These expressways fall under the state government’s jurisdiction, while the annual pass applies only to National Highways maintained by the Centre. As a result, toll amounts will continue to be deducted from the user’s regular FASTag account when travelling on these routes.
How Does the Annual Pass Work?
Once activated, the FASTag will create two linked accounts:
This dual setup ensures smooth travel across different highways while maintaining clarity on where the pass is applicable.
Savings for Commuters
According to Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari, the scheme is expected to bring significant relief for frequent travellers. On average, motorists who previously spent around ₹10,000 annually on tolls will now spend only ₹3,000, saving nearly ₹7,000 every year.
The FASTag annual pass is a welcome move for regular highway users, making travel more economical and hassle-free. However, commuters in Uttar Pradesh must remember that the pass does not extend to the state’s four key expressways. Being aware of where the pass works will help motorists plan their journeys better and avoid surprises at toll plazas.
