Your Universal Account Number (UAN) is a unique 12-digit identifier issued to every employee contributing to the Employees' Provident Fund (EPF). Think of it as a master key that links all your PF accounts, no matter how many times you change jobs. Without an active UAN, you won’t be able to check your PF balance, transfer funds, or file claims online.

Why Your UAN Matters

The best feature of the UAN is that it remains the same throughout your career, even if you switch employers multiple times. This consistency helps consolidate your old and new PF accounts, so you can easily track your savings and manage funds without paperwork or delays.

Once activated, your UAN gives you access to your PF passbook, claim status, KYC updates, and online transfers — all in just a few clicks.

How to Find Your UAN on the EPFO Website

Start by visiting the official EPFO Member e-Sewa website. On the homepage, locate and click the ‘Know your UAN’ link under the login section.

You’ll then be asked to enter your mobile number and complete a captcha. After clicking ‘Request OTP,’ you’ll receive a one-time password via SMS. Enter this OTP to proceed.

Next, you’ll need to provide your name, date of birth, and either your Aadhaar number, PAN, or EPF member ID. If these details match EPFO records, your UAN will be sent to your mobile number by SMS.

Other Ways to Get Your UAN

If the online option isn’t available, there are other ways to retrieve your UAN. Many employers include it on your monthly payslip, so it’s worth checking there. Alternatively, your HR or payroll team can provide your UAN directly.

You can also use the UMANG app, where your UAN appears in the EPF section once you’re logged in.

What to Do After You Get Your UAN

Once you have your UAN, the next step is to activate it on the EPFO Member e-Sewa website. Activation lets you create a password and log in to access online services like checking your passbook or updating KYC details.

It’s also a good idea to link your Aadhaar, PAN, and bank account to your UAN. This helps speed up claim processing and ensures smoother account management. Finally, always keep your mobile number updated with the EPFO to receive timely alerts and updates about your PF.
