As the monsoon picks up pace across India, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued rain alerts for multiple states, signalling a much-needed break from the relentless summer heat. From early monsoon arrivals to intense downpours in the days ahead, here’s what you need to know.

Monsoon Hits Punjab Early, Set to Reach Delhi-NCR Soon

The southwest monsoon made an early entry into Punjab on Sunday — a full 10 days ahead of schedule. It moved in via western Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Himachal Pradesh, all of which have been experiencing steady light to heavy rainfall.

According to IMD, the monsoon is expected to sweep through more northern states like Rajasthan, Haryana, Chandigarh, and Delhi within the next two days. Once it reaches these regions, temperatures are predicted to drop by 2–4°C, offering significant relief from the ongoing heatwave.

Delhi's Earliest Monsoon Since 2013?

If the monsoon arrives in Delhi by June 24, it will mark the earliest onset in over a decade. In 2013, it hit the capital on June 16, while in more recent years, Delhi had to wait until June 30 in 2022 and July 13 in 2021 for monsoon showers.

Heavy Rain Forecast Across Maharashtra, Gujarat, and MP

The IMD has also sounded orange and yellow alerts for parts of Maharashtra. Starting June 23, heavy to very heavy rains are likely to hit the ghat regions of Central Maharashtra, Konkan, and Goa, continuing through June 25.

Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat are also bracing for intense rain. In fact, IMD warns of extremely heavy rainfall in MP on June 23 and 24. The northwest region and the Konkan coast will also see heavy showers through June 26.

Southern States on Rain Radar Too

Southern states like Kerala, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and Telangana are also expected to experience varying intensities of rainfall in the coming days, as the monsoon establishes a broader foothold across the subcontinent.

IMD’s Advisory to Citizens

The weather department has urged people to limit unnecessary travel and follow safety guidelines during heavy rainfall. With showers expected to intensify in the coming days, staying informed and prepared will be key.

The monsoon has not only arrived early in parts of north India but is also expected to bring widespread rain across multiple regions. From cool relief to safety advisories, it’s time to welcome the rains - but with caution.
