The introduction of the Online Gaming Bill has sparked intense debate in Parliament, emerging as a major political flashpoint. Despite loud protests and walkouts by opposition MPs, the bill was passed to create a clear regulatory framework for India’s booming online gaming industry . While the government insists the law is essential for user protection and responsible gaming, critics argue it was rushed and could stifle innovation.
Opposition parties, however, voiced strong criticism, accusing the government of pushing the legislation without adequate consultation with industry stakeholders, gamers, and civil society. Critics warned the bill could stifle innovation, burden smaller startups with compliance costs, and impose unnecessary restrictions on entertainment choices. Some argued that excessive regulation might drive users toward unregulated foreign gaming platforms, undermining the very purpose of the law.
A Step Toward Responsible Gaming
Despite criticism, supporters argue the bill marks a crucial step in building a healthier digital ecosystem. Regulation, they say, will protect vulnerable groups, especially minors, from predatory practices, while also legitimising e-sports and online gaming in India as mainstream sectors of business and entertainment. By aligning with global gaming laws, the government hopes to strike a balance between innovation, safety, and sustainable growth.
Bill Clears Rajya Sabha After Heated Debate
The Rajya Sabha witnessed uproar as opposition MPs strongly objected to the bill’s introduction. Despite repeated calls for deeper review and consultation, the government pushed ahead, passing the legislation through a voice vote. The clearance came just a day after the Lok Sabha’s approval, signalling the Centre’s urgency to implement a new online gaming regulation framework. You may also like
