New Delhi – Satyapal Malik , former Governor of Jammu & Kashmir, Bihar, and Meghalaya, passed away on August 5, 2025, at Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia (RML) Hospital in Delhi. He was 78 and had been battling serious health issues for several months.

Critical Condition Since May 2025

Malik had been undergoing treatment since May 2025 at RML Hospital. Reports indicate he was admitted with complications related to urinary tract infection and kidney failure, which led to his admission to the intensive care unit (ICU). Doctors confirmed his death on Tuesday afternoon.

The news of his passing sent a wave of grief across the country, especially in political circles.

From BJP Leader to Vocal Critic

Satyapal Malik’s political journey was both long and dynamic. He started his career as a student leader in 1968–69 and served in various roles throughout his lifetime. Initially a prominent BJP leader, he later became one of the party's outspoken critics.

His criticism of the central government, especially after his gubernatorial tenure, gained national attention. He often raised concerns about security lapses, corruption, and policy decisions.

Early Life and Education

Born on July 24, 1946, in Hiswara village, Baghpat district, Uttar Pradesh, Malik belonged to a Jat family. He completed his Bachelor of Science and LLB from Meerut College, where he also served as student union president.

He was elected to the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly from 1974 to 1977. Later, he represented Uttar Pradesh in the Rajya Sabha from 1980 to 1989. From 1989 to 1991, he served as a Member of Parliament (Lok Sabha) from Aligarh, representing the Janata Dal.

Governor of J&K During Article 370 Revocation

One of the most significant parts of Satyapal Malik’s career was his time as Governor of Jammu & Kashmir from August 2018 to October 2019. During his tenure, on August 5, 2019, the central government made the historic decision to revoke Article 370, stripping Jammu & Kashmir of its special status and bifurcating it into two union territories.

He thus became the last governor of the erstwhile state of J&K, before it was restructured.

Later Roles and Controversies

Following his J&K tenure, Malik was appointed Governor of Bihar and then Meghalaya. His outspoken nature, however, kept him in the spotlight.

He made headlines for alleging a security failure leading to the 2019 Pulwama terror attack, and for accusing officials of corruption in the Kiru Hydropower Project. His bold statements earned him both praise and criticism.

Country Mourns the Loss

Malik’s death came just a day after the passing of Shibu Soren, former Chief Minister of Jharkhand, who died in Delhi’s Sir Ganga Ram Hospital. Both leaders were respected figures in their states and had long political careers.

Condolences poured in from leaders across party lines. Many praised Malik for his honesty and straightforwardness, even when it led to controversy.

Legacy of a Fierce and Fearless Leader

Satyapal Malik leaves behind a mixed legacy—one of service, transformation, and courage. From holding key political offices to speaking fearlessly about sensitive issues, he carved a unique place in Indian politics. His role in the abrogation of Article 370 will remain a defining moment in India’s modern history.
