Veteran tribal leader and founder of Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), Shibu Soren , breathed his last on Monday at the age of 81. The news was confirmed by his son and current Jharkhand Chief Minister , Hemant Soren , who shared he "feels void" after the loss.
A Towering Figure in Jharkhand Politics
Shibu Soren was more than just a political figure - he was a movement in himself. A staunch advocate for tribal rights and social justice, he played a pivotal role in the formation and political identity of Jharkhand. Soren was admitted to Delhi's Sir Ganga Ram Hospital in late June due to kidney complications.
Over the years, he held the post of Jharkhand's Chief Minister three times - first briefly in March 2005, again from August 2008 to January 2009, and finally from December 2009 to May 2010.

Condolences from across the political spectrum poured in, recognising Soren’s immense contributions to public life.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi remembered him as a leader who remained deeply connected to the grassroots.
"Shri Shibu Soren Ji was a grassroots leader who rose through the ranks of public life with unwavering dedication to the people. He was particularly passionate about empowering tribal communities, the poor and downtrodden. Pained by his passing away. My thoughts are with his family and admirers. Spoke to Jharkhand CM Shri Hemant Soren Ji and expressed condolences. Om Shanti."
Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra also extended her condolences.
"I have messaged Kalpana ji (Kalpana Soren). This is very sad news for all of us. We express our condolences to the family, our prayers are with them."
Congress MP Pramod Tiwari paid a heartfelt tribute, calling Soren the
"symbol of the highest honour of tribals." He added, "Shibu Soren was the loudest voice, biggest identity and symbol of the highest honour of the tribals, on the national level and not just in Jharkhand."
