Social media is once again buzzing with disbelief after a video surfaced from the Purushottam Express, showing a family caught red-handed stealing bedsheets and towels from the train’s first AC coach. The incident, recorded by railway staff, has not only embarrassed the passengers involved but also triggered widespread outrage online.

The video shows Travelling Ticket Examiners (TTEs) and attendants confronting a woman and two men on the platform, demanding that they return the stolen items. After a brief back-and-forth, the family was seen reluctantly handing over the bedsheets and towels that had been stuffed into their bags.

"Sir, see here, bedsheets and blankets are coming out of all the bags. Towels, bedsheets altogether, four sets. Either return them or pay Rs 780," the railway attendant can be heard saying in Odia.

Trying to defend themselves, one passenger claimed it was an honest mistake, saying his mother may have “accidentally packed” the sheets. The staff, however, refused to buy the excuse, pointing out the contradiction of travelling in 1st AC considered a premium privilege yet resorting to theft. The TTE further cautioned the family that the matter could be escalated under the Railways Act.

A clip of the incident was shared online with the caption: "Travelling in the 1st AC of the Purushottam Express is a matter of pride itself. But still, people are there who don't hesitate to steal and take home those bedsheets supplied for additional comfort during travel."

Soon after, netizens flooded the comments with anger. Words like “shameless” and “disgusting” echoed across platforms. Some demanded strict punishment, including permanent travel bans, while others called for heavier fines.

One user fumed, "How low can people stoop? These are public resources meant for comfort, not personal loot." Another remarked, "Travelling in 1st AC is a privilege, but stealing bedsheets shows a lack of respect and honesty. Let's value public resources and maintain decorum."

A third commenter didn’t mince words: "Even if they returned, they should still be fined for this criminal act. Until they are punished, this behaviour won't go away. These kinds of people bring us shame nationally and internationally."

Responding to the viral video, Railway Seva’s official account stated, "For necessary action escalated to the concerned official."

Indian Railways provides passengers in sleeper and AC coaches with clean bedding sets to ensure a comfortable journey. These items are meant to be used onboard and returned before disembarking. The latest incident, however, has once again raised questions about passenger behaviour, respect for public property, and the need for stricter enforcement.
