The railways have hiked fares by 1 paisa per kilometer for non-AC classes and by 2 paisa per kilometer for all AC classes in mail and express trains from July 1. Railway ministry officials had hinted at the proposed fare revision on June 24. However, the official circular containing the fare table as per trains and class categories was released on Monday.

In the interest of daily commuters, there has been no change in the prices of suburban trains and monthly season tickets. The fare of ordinary second class has not been hiked up to 500 km and for distances beyond that, ticket prices have been hiked by half a paisa per kilometer. Ordinary sleeper class and first-class passengers will also have to pay half a paisa more per kilometer from July 1.

According to the Railway Ministry, the new fare revision will also apply to the premier and special train services like Rajdhani, Shatabdi, Duronto, Vande Bharat, Tejas, Humsafar, Amrit Bharat, Mahamana, Gatiman, Antyodaya, Jan Shatabdi, Yuva Express, AC Vistadome coach, Anubhuti coach, and ordinary non-suburban services.

No change in ancillary charges
According to the ministry, the revised fare will be applicable on tickets booked on or after July 1. Tickets issued before this date will remain valid at the existing fare without any fare adjustment. PRS, UTS, and manual ticketing systems are being updated accordingly.

According to the ministry, no change has been made in ancillary charges. For example, reservation fees, superfast surcharge, and other charges have remained unchanged. Similarly, Goods and Services Tax (GST) will continue to be charged as per the applicable rules and the fare-rounding principles will remain as per the existing norms.

Tatkal ticket will not be available without Aadhaar.
The rule of booking tatkal tickets on railways has also changed from July 1. Tatkal tickets will be available only to those passengers whose IRCTC account is linked to Aadhaar. From mid-July, OTP-based authentication will be necessary, which will come on the mobile number linked to Aadhaar. Railway agents will not be able to book tickets for the first 30 minutes of the start of Tatkal booking.
