Starting August 1, 2025, the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) is set to roll out a fresh set of guidelines aimed at improving efficiency and reducing system strain. With crores of users relying on apps like GPay, PhonePe, and Paytm every day, the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) is tightening its rules to ensure smoother, more secure digital transactions.

1. Daily Balance Check Now Capped

Currently, UPI users can check their account balances as often as they like. But from August 1, this will be restricted to 50 balance checks per day per app. These checks must be initiated manually by the user - apps won’t be allowed to do it automatically anymore.

2. Autopayments Get Fixed Time Slots

Recurring payments - like subscription fees, utility bills, or EMIs - will now be processed during designated time windows:

  • Before 10:00 AM
  • Between 1:00 PM and 5:00 PM
  • After 9:30 PM

Each mandate will get one initial attempt and three retry opportunities, totalling four chances per mandate.

3. Viewing Linked Bank Accounts Also Limited

To reduce unnecessary API calls and server overloads, users will now be able to view their linked bank accounts only 25 times a day across each UPI app.

4. Failed Transaction Status Check: Now Thrice Daily

If a transaction fails, you’ll only be able to check its status three times a day, with a minimum 90-second gap between each attempt. This aims to reduce system congestion and increase the likelihood of faster resolutions.

These rule changes are designed to make UPI transactions faster, more secure, and less demanding on backend systems. As digital payments continue to grow, small tweaks like these could go a long way in ensuring a more reliable experience for users across the country. Make sure to update your usage habits starting August 1!
