A shocking incident unfolded on Wednesday during Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta’s public grievance hearing , popularly known as ‘ Jan Sunwai .’ The session, meant for citizens to present their problems directly to the CM, took a violent turn when a man identified as 41-year-old Sakriya Rajesh Bhai Khimji Bhai from Rajkot, Gujarat, allegedly attacked her.
The Incident at Jan Sunwai
The Jan Sunwai had begun early in the morning at the CM’s residence. Around 8 am, eyewitnesses say Sakriya approached Gupta, handed her a document, suddenly shouted, and then allegedly assaulted her. He reportedly slapped her, pulled her hair, and hurled abuses before being restrained by security personnel.
Some sources, however, suggested a different sequence of events - claiming that a heavy object was thrown at the Chief Minister, which caused her to lose balance. Officials have yet to confirm the exact details.
Why Was He There?
Preliminary investigations reveal that Sakriya arrived at the venue carrying documents related to one of his relatives, who is currently lodged in Tihar Jail. He is believed to have sought the Chief Minister’s intervention in the matter.
Delhi Police are working with their Gujarat counterparts to verify his identity and personal background. His political affiliations, if any, are still under investigation.
Police and Party Response
Sakriya was immediately taken into custody and shifted to the Civil Lines police station, where he is undergoing interrogation. Following the incident, security at the Chief Minister’s residence has been tightened.
BJP spokesperson Praveen Shankar also commented: “A man, believed to be around 35 years old, handed over a document before suddenly attacking the Chief Minister. While it is not yet clear if he is affiliated with any political party, his remarks before the assault suggested that he may be linked to a party discontent with its position in Delhi.”
Gupta’s Health Update
Soon after the incident, Gupta was taken for a medical check-up. BJP’s Delhi chief Virendraa Sachdeva reassured reporters that she is stable and safe, though shaken. “Doctors have confirmed that Gupta is stable but in shock. She remains determined to continue her daily work and Jan Sunwai sessions. She is a strong woman with a clear commitment to Delhi,” he said, dismissing rumours that she had been slapped or struck with a stone.
Investigation Continues
Police are now digging deeper into Sakriya’s past and possible motives behind the attack. For now, confusion lingers over the exact sequence of events, but what remains certain is that the shocking assault has raised serious concerns about security during public grievance hearings.
