In an age where bills, rents, and EMIs dominate daily life, an Indian couple has captured the imagination of millions by creating a home that costs practically nothing to run. Kavya and Sangeeth have built what they call a “zero cost of living” house-and their story is making people across the internet rethink what it means to live a rich, fulfilling life.

The couple posted a video on Instagram offering an inside look at their home, showcasing how they’ve created a space powered entirely by self-sustaining systems.

People Called Us Stupid

In the video, Kavya opens up about the criticism they faced when she and her partner, Sangeeth, chose to invest nearly 60% of their savings into building their unconventional dream home. “We are a couple who were called stupid for investing 60 per cent of our savings to build a home which most people would find messy," she said, adding, “But what’s interesting is, now our little home has zero cost of living ."

More than just a place to live, their home is a fully functioning ecosystem. They grow their own vegetables, cultivate rice, and raise fish in a small pond. For daily protein, they rely on fresh eggs and milk from their own chickens and cows.

“So, eggs and milk are on the house," Kavya smiles.

Sustained by Nature, Fueled by Purpose

What makes Kavya and Sangeeth’s home truly unique is its smart use of natural energy and waste management. Their kitchen runs on fuel generated by a biogas plant, using wet waste processed right at home. “So, we don’t have to spend money to cook our food," Kavya explains.

The entire house runs on solar power, which not only lights their home but also fuels irrigation for their crops. Every corner of the house serves a purpose-one room is fully devoted to growing mushrooms, while they also collect fresh honey from their own beehives.

Their lifestyle goes beyond sustainability-it’s a conscious financial plan. “What we have extra, we sell it so we can save a bit more money to keep building our dream home. In this modern world, if you find these things interesting, you’re probably among the very few currently working toward a sustainable retirement plan," Kavya says.

Their Instagram caption offers a poetic glimpse into their life:

“More than the money, the thought is always to wake up at a home where you never feel stressed or irritated, you would definitely have those moments you sit and talk with your loved ones about little dreams right, it’s just like that. growing our own food, connected to nature, managing our own waste in a sensibly sustainable set up. Can’t say it’s 100% sustainable but it’s great to keep trying, having this conversation after making our chickens get home with the sound of crickets around, life feels peaceful. in the next 10 days our mushrooms will sprout, and would be happy to share them with a few. After this rain stops, it’s our little dream to build a small tree house! If you could come and give us company, that would be fun."
