Human Conversation Decline: Is people's conversation steadily decreasing? This study will surprise you.
Changing Communication Habits: People today are speaking much less than they used to. Researchers examined data from 22 different studies between 2005 and 2019. Let us tell you what they found.
Are people speaking less than before?
Why Conversation Is Declining In Smartphone Era: Today's times have completely changed. Once upon a time, people would sit together and talk for hours in the evening, sharing their joys and sorrows. But now smartphones have taken that place. The situation is such that even conversations within the family have reduced. But are people really talking less now than before? The data from a new study is shocking. In the era of smartphones, daily conversations between people are rapidly decreasing. If you know the reason, you too will be surprised.
What did the research reveal?
A large analysis spanning several years has revealed that people today are speaking significantly less than they used to. Researchers from the University of Missouri-Kansas City and the University of Arizona examined data from 22 different studies between 2005 and 2019. This included audio recordings of approximately 2,200 people. According to the results, the average number of words spoken daily has declined by approximately 28 percent. While people used to speak approximately 16,632 words, this number has now dropped to approximately 11,900. Importantly, participants were unaware that their words were being counted, making it less likely that they would change their behavior.
The greatest impact on youth
This decline is particularly pronounced among young people. Those under 25 years old speak an average of 451 fewer words per day, while those over 25 speak a decrease of approximately 314 words.
Lifestyle changes
Experts believe this is due to our changing lifestyles. Face-to-face interactions have been replaced by mobile and app-based conversations. Texting and social media have transformed the very way we communicate. Things that used to involve face-to-face communication, like getting help at a store, asking for directions, or chatting with neighbors, are now done online.
What does the psychologist say?
Psychologists say its impact isn't limited to loneliness. The emotion, tone of voice, and connection that come with face-to-face conversations are unmatched through written messages. Gradually, basic communication skills, such as understanding what the other person is saying and responding in a timely manner, can also weaken. Another important finding has emerged regarding mothers and children. Observational research found that when mothers use smartphones, they talk to their young children approximately 16 percent less. This means that excessive screen use is also reducing essential interactions with children. Conversation is an active process. It involves paying attention to the other person, responding promptly, and controlling body language.
Do women talk more?
The data also revealed that, on average, women speak more than men, with women speaking over 13,000 words daily, while men average around 12,000. However, this difference reverses with age. Experts believe this situation can be reversed. Small changes like talking more with children, encouraging phone calls, and occasionally stepping away from the mobile phone can help.
What did the expert say?
According to the study's co-author, Valeria Pfeifer, if everyone started talking to just one new person every day, this decline could be halted. The solution is simple: we just need to make conversation a part of our everyday lives again.
