Hindu ladies commemorate Hartalika Teej, according to the Hindu scriptures. Aalika implies female companions or Sakhi, whereas Harta means kidnapping. It is said that once, Lord Vishnu dispatched Naraj Ji to King Himavat, the father of Goddess Parvati, with a marriage proposal, which he accepted. However, upon learning of this, Goddess Parvati became enraged and told her female friends that she preferred to wed Lord Shiva rather than Lord Vishnu.
Her female companions advised her to leave home and urged her to follow rigorous penance in order to marry Lord Shiv. Her dream was granted when Lord Shiva accepted her as his bride after witnessing her intense love and devotion for him. She resided in the wilderness and carried out rigorous penance.
