In a significant move ahead of the 2027 ODI World Cup preparations, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced the squads for India’s white-ball tour of Australia starting October 19, 2025. Test skipper Shubman Gill has been appointed as India’s new ODI captain, replacing Rohit Sharma, while Suryakumar Yadav continues as the leader of the T20I side. The tour includes three ODIs and five T20Is across iconic Australian venues.

Gill Takes Over ODI Leadership

At just 26 years of age, Shubman Gill becomes India’s 28th men’s ODI captain. Known for his consistency and maturity, Gill has already showcased leadership skills in the Test format. His elevation marks a generational shift as India gears up for the future. Alongside him, Shreyas Iyer has been named vice-captain of the ODI squad, providing experience and stability.

Rohit and Kohli Return to ODIs

The announcement also confirmed the return of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, both of whom had taken a seven-month break after their Test retirements earlier this year. Their last outing came in the Champions Trophy 2025 final in Dubai, where India defeated New Zealand to lift the trophy. Rohit starred with a match-winning 76, while Kohli managed only one run but remains the highest active ODI run-scorer with 14,181 runs. Rohit follows closely with 11,168 runs, making the duo crucial to India’s campaign in Australia.

Fresh Faces and Key Inclusions

The ODI squad has a mix of youth and experience. Dhruv Jurel has been included as a back-up wicketkeeper in place of the injured Rishabh Pant. Mohammed Siraj makes his return after missing the Champions Trophy, providing much-needed pace alongside Arshdeep Singh and Prasidh Krishna. Kuldeep Yadav and Washington Sundar will handle the spin responsibilities, supported by all-round options like Axar Patel and Nitish Kumar Reddy.

T20I Squad Led by Suryakumar Yadav

For the T20I leg, Suryakumar Yadav will lead the side, continuing the momentum from India’s Asia Cup 2025 triumph. The squad largely mirrors the Asia Cup-winning combination, with the inclusion of star players like Jasprit Bumrah, Rinku Singh, Sanju Samson, and Shivam Dube. Shubman Gill, while focused on ODI captaincy, has been named vice-captain for the T20Is. This balance of youth and experience makes the T20 side a formidable unit against Australia.
