Mike Tannenbaum boldly predicts Will Howard to replace Aaron Rodgers as Pittsburgh Steelers starter in dramatic December shakeup
In July 2025, a former NFL general manager made a bold claim about the Pittsburgh Steelers’ rookie quarterback Will Howard. The GM spoke publicly and said something that surprised many fans and analysts. Will Howard is a fresh face in the NFL, and the Pittsburgh Steelers have big questions about their quarterback line‑up. The former executive’s comment stirred up talk about whether Will Howard could soon lead the team. What did he say, who is Will Howard, and how could this shape the Steelers’ season?
Mike Tannenbaum predicts Will Howard will be Pittsburgh Steelers starter by December
On July 4, 2025, former Jets GM Mike Tannenbaum told ESPN’s Get Up show that Will Howard will be starting for the Pittsburgh Steelers by December 1. He noted Will Howard led Ohio State to the 2024 national championship with an 89 QBR and 35 touchdown passes.
Mike Tannenbaum pointed out that Aaron Rodgers turned 42 this December and the Pittsburgh Steelers’ offensive line allowed many sacks last year. He explained that with older quarterbacks and weak pass protection, the team might turn to the rookie.
He believes coach Mike Tomlin will play the best quarterback, and that Will Howard has “a meaningful chance” to be the future leader.

Will Howard profile and Aaron Rodgers’ backup role create opening
Will Howard is 23 years old and played college football at Kansas State and Ohio State, earning a national title in January 2025. The Pittsburgh Steelers picked him in the sixth round of the 2025 NFL Draft and added Aaron Rodgers on June 6 for $13.6 million as a veteran backup.
Aaron Rodgers has served as mentor, with Mason Rudolph also on the depth chart. But Mike Tannenbaum thinks Aaron Rodgers’ age and lack of offseason work could shift the QB1 role to Will Howard by December.
This season, all eyes will be on the Pittsburgh Steelers' quarterback room. Will coach Mike Tomlin stick with Aaron Rodgers, or will he follow the former GM’s advice and give the keys to Will Howard by the end of the year.
