What was expected to be one of the happiest moments in the lives of Indian cricketer Smriti Mandhana and singer-composer Palash Muchhal took an unexpected and emotional turn when two sudden hospitalisations forced the families to halt the celebrations. With most pre-wedding functions already completed, including the haldi, the couple were set to tie the knot on November 23 in Sangli. However, within hours, the celebrations came to a standstill.

The first major shock came on Sunday when Smriti’s father, Shrinivas Mandhana, began experiencing heart-attack–like symptoms and had to be rushed to Sarvhit Hospital. Doctors later told ANI that his condition appeared to have been triggered by “physical or mental stress” from the busy wedding preparations. The family had been celebrating joyfully just the previous day, making the sudden twist even more distressing. “Ek din phele bahut dance kiya… Instagram pe Stories dal rahe the. But while we were planning the baraat, he suddenly felt discomfort. Pehle bataya nahi… jab badhne lagi, ambulance bulai,” said Palash’s mother, Amita Muchhal, recalling how things changed in minutes.

Seeing Smriti’s father unwell affected everyone deeply, but it especially weighed heavily on Palash, who shares a very close bond with him. Amita revealed that the emotional pressure took a serious toll on her son. “Palash ko uncle se bahut zyada attachment hai… Smriti se zyada yeh dono close hain,” she told Hindustan Times. According to her, it was Palash who made the first decision about the ceremony, saying the wedding must not go ahead unless Shrinivas recovered. “Jab unko hogaya toh Smriti se phele Palash ne decision liya ke phere nahi karne jab tak uncle thik nahi ho jaate.”

But the emotional strain soon landed Palash in the hospital as well. A day after Shrinivas was admitted, Palash broke down under stress and was rushed to a hospital in Sangli. Amita described the frightening incident, saying, “Rote rote ek dum tabiyat kharab ho gai… stress bahut hai. They had to keep him in the hospital for four hours. IV drip chadi, ECG hua, aur doosre tests hoye. Sab normal aaye, but the stress was just too much.” Fortunately, the results were stable and he was discharged before returning to Mumbai, where he is currently “resting and recovering.”

With both families shaken and the groom advised complete rest, all remaining functions scheduled for November 24 were cancelled. Only the pheras were left when the hard decision had to be taken, but in the moment, the family agreed that health had to come first. “Smriti and Palash dono takleef mein hain… Palash dreamt of coming home with his bride. I had even planned a special welcome,” Amita said.

Despite the unexpected setback, the mood remains hopeful. Amita believes this pause is temporary and the celebrations will resume soon. “Everything will be fine… shaadi bohot jaldi hogi,” she concluded, confident that once both sides recover from the emotional whirlwind, the wedding will finally take place the way it was meant to.
