A major NHL trade has just happened, and fans from both teams are reacting fast. The news wasn’t confirmed right away, but talk had been building for days. One of Toronto’s biggest stars was rumored to be on the move. And now, after many past failed tries, the Vegas Golden Knights have made it official. They’ve finally brought in a top forward who had many teams watching him closely.

Mitch Marner signs 8-year deal with Vegas after trade from Toronto
On Monday, July 1, 2025, Mitch Marner was traded from the Toronto Maple Leafs to the Vegas Golden Knights. Along with the trade, Marner signed an eight-year contract extension worth $12 million per season. He is now signed through his 36th birthday. The deal was first reported by TSN’s Darren Dreger and later confirmed by ESPN’s Chris Johnston.

In return, the Maple Leafs received center Nicolas Roy . Roy is a strong bottom-six forward who scored 15 goals and added 16 assists in 71 games for Vegas last season. He is signed for two more years with a $3 million cap hit.

The trade happened just before NHL free agency opened. Marner was expected to hit the market but instead agreed to the deal with Vegas early. Reports said Toronto tried to re-sign him, but Marner chose not to discuss a contract with the team during the season.

Mitch Marner leaves Toronto as one of its top players everMitch Marner, 28, was drafted fourth overall by the Maple Leafs in 2015. In 739 games, he scored 741 points. Last season, he had his best year yet with 102 points. He was known for his skill, fast play, and ability to help both on offense and defense.

Team Canada coach Jon Cooper once said, “Mitch can do it all… power play, penalty kill, five-on-five. He just keeps getting better.”
Marner also played big minutes every game, ranking among the top 10 forwards in time on ice for the past six seasons.

Despite his success, Marner received criticism for the Maple Leafs’ struggles in the playoffs. Many believed he wanted a fresh start. Vegas had tried to get him before, including a possible three-team trade with the Carolina Hurricanes in March, but that fell through.
