“Why are you wearing my father's jersey”: Paulina Gretzky's funny New York club encounter with fan wearing Wayne Gretzky's shirt goes viral

It was just another night out in an amazing City called New York. Nothing had been arranged. I chose something absurd to wear: an ancient hockey t-shirt and a 1980s Wayne Gretzky shirt I had received. I was not trying to find anything outrageous happening. But what followed truly took me aback. One of the best and most rare occasions of my life was when someone's hand touched my shoulder while at a club.

The music was heavy, the lights were flashing, and I was just having fun at a NYC pub. Somebody abruptly reached my shoulder. Looking directly at my jersey, a woman turned around. She asked with a smile, "Why are you wearing my father's jersey in a club?” I didn't catch it at first. Then she spelled it out, "I'm Paulina Gretzky." Yes, the daughter of Wayne Gretzky.





We both burst out laughing at how shocked the moment was. I told her , "I just wanted to wear it tonight. I'm such a big fan of your dad." Smiling, she was quite all right with it. Both of us found it funny and shocking. Though so perfect, the timing, location, and fact that I just wore that jersey all of it seemed so erratic.

Paulina Gretzky's boyfriend asked if he might snap our photo after we had giggled and talked for a while. I was almost unable to believe it. Here I was laughing and grinning with Wayne Gretzky's daughter after I had a night out.


Meeting a star was not like this. It was just a fun, airy moment between individuals who just happened to have a tie to something wonderful: her father's legendary career, and my lifelong love.


Officially, that image is among his favourites of all time. He never thought donning a jersey in a club would turn out this way. That is New York City, though, where tales you will never forget abound in surprises.
