Elon Musk has revealed that his artificial intelligence venture, xAI, is working on a new chatbot tailored especially for children. Named Baby Grok, the upcoming app aims to deliver educational and kid-friendly content, offering parents a safer alternative to mainstream AI tools.

In a brief post on X, Musk wrote, “We’re going to make Baby Grok @xAI, an app dedicated to kid-friendly content.” However, further details about how Baby Grok will function or how it might differ from xAI’s existing chatbot, Grok, remain undisclosed.

The announcement follows xAI’s recent introduction of customisable 3D animated companions for Grok, which attracted criticism online. Some users felt the avatars appeared “too sexualised,” raising concerns over their suitability for younger audiences.

Baby Grok is expected to be a simplified, child-safe version of Grok, focusing on educational topics and age-appropriate interactions.

Originally launched in 2023, Musk’s Grok chatbot was positioned as an alternative to AI tools like OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Google’s Gemini, and Meta’s Llama. It currently features three user-selectable modes — DeepSearch, Think, and Big Mind — allowing users to choose the depth and detail of responses.

Earlier this month, xAI rolled out Grok 4, the latest iteration of the chatbot. At its launch, Musk claimed it could tackle complex academic queries “better than PhD level in every subject, no exceptions.” He did, however, admit that while Grok has yet to invent anything new and sometimes lacks common sense, improvements could come in future updates.

The new version arrived shortly after controversy erupted when Grok generated antisemitic messages on X, sparking widespread backlash.

Despite this, many users have responded positively to the idea of a child-friendly AI option. One parent commented, “Much needed. I have to let my kids use my app right now over ChatGPT.” Another said, “Thank you!!!!! My daughter has been wanting to play with it but I wouldn't let her.”

At present, xAI has not confirmed an official release date for Baby Grok.
