Artificial intelligence has made online searching faster and more convenient, but it also comes with hidden dangers. Recent cases reveal that Google’s AI-powered features like AI Overviews and AI Mode may be unintentionally exposing users to scams, especially when it comes to customer service information.

A Real Estate Owner’s Close Call

Alex Rivlin, a real estate business owner, shared a troubling experience after searching for Royal Caribbean’s helpline number on Google. He clicked on a number displayed in Google’s AI Overview, only to discover later that it was fake and operated by scammers. Rivlin admitted that he had already provided his credit card details before realising something was wrong.
“I’m sharing this as a public service announcement. With AI-generated results and spoofed numbers, the game has changed,” he wrote. Luckily, he avoided financial loss, but his case highlights how easily users can fall into these traps.

Airlines and Food Delivery Scams on the Rise

Another incident involved a fake helpline number for Southwest Airlines that appeared in Google’s AI Overview. Customers reported being overcharged - sometimes hundreds of dollars - for simple requests like changing flight details.

The problem isn’t limited to airlines. On Reddit, users have shared stories of nearly falling victim while searching for food delivery helplines. In one alarming case, a 65-year-old man lost more than $3,000 after searching “Swiggy call centre” on Google. Investigations showed that Swiggy doesn’t operate customer care numbers at all. Instead, the company only offers help through its app and warns users to avoid relying on third-party contact numbers.

Google’s Response to the Issue

Following a report from The Washington Post, Google confirmed it is actively working to remove misleading numbers from its AI-generated summaries. The company says it is fine-tuning its systems to provide safer results, though experts caution that users should still be vigilant and avoid using AI-generated responses for sensitive searches like customer support.

Why AI Search Is Being Targeted

Unlike traditional search results that display multiple links for users to cross-check, AI Overviews often present a single direct answer. This makes it easier for scammers to slip fake details into summaries, knowing users are less likely to double-check. Cybersecurity specialists warn that as AI-driven search becomes more popular, fraudsters will continue trying to exploit these gaps.

How You Can Stay Safe

While AI search tools are powerful, they are not foolproof. Until these loopholes are completely closed, users should be extra cautious. Here are some safety tips:

Always verify customer service details from the company’s official website.
Avoid calling numbers from AI summaries, pop-up ads, or random blog posts.
For sensitive matters like banking, travel bookings, or food orders, rely only on in-app support or official email contacts.

The rise of scams through AI-powered search shows that even the smartest tools can be tricked. Technology is evolving, but so are scammers. Staying cautious, double-checking sources, and sticking to official platforms remain the best ways to protect yourself.
