Google: From ‘Code Red’ to one of the leaders in AI
According to a report by Business Insider, the company is expected to unveil Gemini 3.0 very soon, a release insiders believe could solidify Google's standing as a leader in the AI race. It said that Google employees have already been teasing the model.

The anticipation is driven by reports that Gemini 3 is expected to deliver significant improvements in coding and multimedia generation, potentially including a substantial upgrade to Google’s popular image tool, Nano Banana .

For Google, which has been working to overcome a narrative of playing catch-up and issuing Code Red since the launch of ChatGPT in late 2022, Gemini 3 is seen as a crucial step. Citing insiders, the report suggests the new model is “extremely impressive” and could give Google a shot at taking the top spot, especially after OpenAI’s highly anticipated ChatGPT 5 launched with limited immediate impact.

The story behind ‘Nano Banana’
Recently, Google’s ‘Nano Banana’ gained popularity and an executive revealed the unlikely origin of the name for its popular image generation model. David Sharon, a group product manager for the Gemini App, explained on the Made By Google Podcast that the name was created by an employee named Nina as a placeholder.

The name was used when Google submitted the model anonymously to LM Arena, an open platform for AI evaluation, to mask its origin and test it fairly. The name unexpectedly went viral in the online community.

Sharon noted the company adopted the name because users continued to call it "Nano Banana" even after its official launch. The model is credited with achieving breakthroughs in character consistency and complex visual concepts, distinguishing it from earlier AI photo models.
