Google has officially confirmed that its Keep reminders will be merged with Google Tasks in the coming months, completing a transition it first announced in April last year. Though a specific rollout date is still under wraps, the tech giant has revealed more about how this change will impact users and their workflow.
Why Google Is Integrating Keep Reminders with Tasks
The upcoming update aims to help users manage their to-dos in one unified space. According to Google, this integration will make it simpler to organise and track reminders without needing to switch between multiple apps. All new reminders created via Google Assistant or Gemini will now be directly saved in Google Tasks.Creating Reminders via Assistant or Gemini
You can continue using voice commands like “Hey Google, remind me to call mom at 6 PM”, and the Assistant or Gemini will save this reminder as a task in Google Tasks. The app will notify you when the scheduled time arrives, just like it does for existing reminders. What Happens with Location-Based Reminders?
If a reminder is set based on a location, that location will now be saved in the task’s details section within Google Tasks. However, Google clarified that users will no longer receive notifications based on location triggers, a change from how Keep handled them previously.Tasks Assigned by Others: How They Will Appear
If someone assigns you a reminder, it will still be added to your task list, and the assigner's name will be shown in the task's title. However, the person who set the reminder will not have visibility or access to the task once it's added to your account.Incomplete Tasks Stay on Your Calendar
In case you forget or delay completing a task, it won’t just disappear. Google says incomplete tasks will appear as “Pending” on your calendar for up to 365 days, located in the all-day section to help you keep track of unfinished to-dos.Using Assistant to Manage Tasks and Reminders
Once the integration is in place, you’ll be able to use voice commands to manage your tasks. Commands such as “Hey Google, show me my tasks” or “Hey Google, show me my reminders” will fetch your to-do list from Google Tasks seamlessly. No Need to Install Tasks App Separately
Interestingly, you don’t need to install the Google Tasks app to use this new system. Notifications for tasks will also be sent via the Google Calendar app and the Google app, offering flexible access and reminders. When Is the Change Coming?
While the exact date is still unknown, Google has confirmed that this migration will happen before the end of 2025. Users should expect to see the transition take effect in the next few months, as preparations for full integration are already underway. What This Means for You
This integration marks a significant shift in how Google handles reminders across its ecosystem. Users will benefit from having a centralised place to manage tasks, although the removal of some features—like location-triggered alerts—might take some getting used to.Next Story
