A recent advisory from the Indian government has raised eyebrows among smartphone users. The alert, issued by Cyber Dost , a division of the Ministry of Home Affairs , warns against a common habit that could put your privacy at risk — keeping the internet on while making phone calls.

Your Phone Could Be Listening In

According to a warning shared through an official video, leaving your mobile data on during a call may give some apps the chance to secretly access your microphone — potentially eavesdropping on your conversations. The alert urges users to be cautious and regularly review app permissions on their devices.

To check which apps have microphone access:

  1. Go to your phone’s Settings
  2. Tap Privacy > Permission Manager
  3. Select Microphone or Camera to view and modify access for individual apps

Some users may also notice microphone permissions in Chrome browser settings. This can be accessed by opening Chrome, tapping the three-dot menu, navigating to Settings > Site Settings, and checking microphone access.

TRAI to Launch Digital Connectivity Ratings for Buildings

In a separate development, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) is preparing to roll out a star-rating system to assess how digitally connected a property is. This initiative will cover both new and existing buildings and aims to push builders to upgrade connectivity infrastructure.

So far, five companies have shown interest in joining the programme. According to TRAI Chairman Anil Kumar Lahoti, the first ratings could be introduced this month, and several property owners have already begun inquiring about the process.

The move is expected to benefit both builders and residents by improving network coverage and internet access in residential and commercial spaces.

From guarding your private conversations to boosting building connectivity, these recent government measures signal a growing focus on digital safety and infrastructure. It’s a good time to check your app permissions and ensure your devices are set up with privacy in mind.
